Shot Recreation - The Everything Bagel

Compositing Breakdown

Final Still.

This project was a shot recreation of the Everything Bagel from the Daniels's 2022 film Everything Everywhere All At Once. I am a huge fan of this film, so I jumped at the opportunity to take a crack at one of the shots from the movie myself. Using Houdini and Maya, I created the models I needed to build the set as well as the bagel itself and any accompanying seeds, salt, and everything else. I also took the opportunity to create particle simulations; something I had never done before this project. All smoke and floating particulates in the scene were created using Houdini's particle FX tools. After that, I textured, animated, and lit the scene within Houdini before rendering out my different layers using Karma.
Where this scene really posed a challenge was in compositing. When doing research for this project, I was shocked by how much the small VFX team was able to create on such a small budget and with such limited tools. So like them, I decided to challenge myself a little more in the compositing phase, but rather than using After Effects like the VFX team did, I used Nuke. Compositing FX was a new challenge for me, and I did my best to pull out all the stops to make sure I was producing a final image that matched the reference footage as much as possible. This meant learning a lot of new compositing tricks, as well as some color grading on the final sequence. Overall this project was a blast to work on and I can not wait to revisit it and apply all the lessons I learned along the way. I hope to be back with a new and improved version soon!
